OPEN NOW: UK Chevening Global Scholarships

Application period: usually September – November every year.

Chevening is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme that offers future leaders the unique opportunity to study in the UK. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding professionals from all over the world to pursue a one-year master’s degree in any subject at any UK university.

Benefits

Chevening provides fully-funded scholarships, leaving you free to focus on achieving your academic goals and enjoying the experience of a lifetime. You will live and study in the UK for a year, during which time you will develop professionally and academically, grow your network, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must:

• Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
• Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
• Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
• Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
• Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by 15 July 2021.

You are not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship if you:

• Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong).
• Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country. Applicants who are citizens of a Chevening-eligible country and who hold refugee status in a Chevening-eligible country are eligible for a scholarship.
• Are an employee, a former employee, or relative* of an employee (since July 2017) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions; the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy; Department for International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office), or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
• Employees, former employees, or relatives* of an employee (since July 2017) of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply, but cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the organisation from which they work, previously worked, or are affiliated with through relatives.
• Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.

Once submitted, applications undergo an electronic sift against our eligibility criteria. Any applications deemed ineligible will be removed from the selection process. Please see the list of common errors here. If you make these errors in your application form, your application will be ineligible. Please note that once your application has been submitted, it is not possible to change it retrospectively.

OPEN NOW: Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

Application period: usually September – December every year.

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

There are two types of Scholarships:

Types of scholarship

• The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level.
  Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
• Art scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland.
  Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

Eligibility

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

a) Candidate profile
b) Quality of the research project or artistic work
c) Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

Selection Process

Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The short-listed applications are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

OPEN NOW: Germany DAAD Scholarships

Application Deadlines: Varies depending on selected program

DAAD scholarships are aimed primarily at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs and are awarded for study and research visits to universities and non-university research institutions in Germany. In some programmes, internships are also funded.

• Monthly Allowance:
  • Undergraduates students: €750 / month.
  • Graduate students: €850 / month.
  • Doctoral/PhD students: €1,200 / month
• Flat-rate travel Allowance

  • Additional Off-research allowance
  • Family benefits
  • Funds for language courses

Global Korea Scholarships (GKS)

Application period: usually February – March every year.

The Global Korea Scholarships program is available for:

• Undergraduate course: 4-year courses at designated universities
  (Transfer between universities not allowed)
• Graduate course: Master’s or Ph.D. courses at general graduate schools of Korean universities

Awarded students are required to take a 1-year language training course at a language institution located on campus of the domestic university. Only people holding a score higher than level 5 in TOPIK are exempted.

Eligibility:

• under 40 y.o. at the age of entrance for graduate students
• under 25 y.o. at the age of entrance for undergraduate students, with 12 years of formal education completed at the date of arrival (completed high school)

Selection Process:

Applicants for a GKS must be recommended either by the Korean Embassy of their country or by a domestic University. The National Institute for International Education will evaluates the candidates and proceed with the final selection of the grantees.

European Union’s Erasmus + Scholarships

Application period: usually January – May every year.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) is delivered by an international consortium of higher education institutions. It is opened to students and Master’s level worldwide.

Eligibility:

• Holding a higher-education degree / or equivalent in the degree awarding countries
• Have not beed already awarded another Erasmus Mundus scholarship
• Are not benefiting another EU-funded scholarship

Application Process:

Applicant must select a program from the EMJMD catalog

Duration:

Minimum 12 months, maximum 24 months.

Benefits:

• Participation costs: tuition fees and mandatory insurance coverage (EMJMD usually deducts the participation costs from the scholarship)
• Contribution to travel costs: between €1,000 to 3,000 depending on the location of the residing country and EMJMD coordinating institution
• Resettlement allowance: €1,000 for students residing in a partner country only
• Monthly allowance: €1,000 / month (submit to conditions)

Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships:

Application period: Depends on programs:

• Undergraduate (recommendation by Embassy): around April – May every year
• Undergraduate(recommendation by University): December every year
• Japanese Studies Students (recommendation by Embassy): December every year
• Japanese Studies Students (recommendation by University): February every year
• Research Students (recommendation by Embassy): around April – May every year
• Research Students (recommendation by University): end of December – January every year

The Japanese Government Scholarships are possible for 4 categories of students:

• Research Students
• Undergraduate Students
• College of Technology Students
• Specialized Training College Students

Eligibility:

• under 35 y.o. for research students, be a college graduate (or prospective graduate), or have completed 16 years of formal education
• between 17 to 22 y.o. for undergraduate, college of technology and specialized training college students who have completed 12 years of formal education (high school of similar)

Selection Process:

There are two ways to apply for a MEXT scholarship, via your country’s Embassy of Japan, or via a University recommendation.

• First selection done in your country with the Embassy of Japan of your country
  (first round: written exam, second round: interview)
• Final selection done by MEXT

Duration:

• Research Students: 6 months to 1 year (including Japanese-language training)
• Undergraduate Students: 5 years including Japanese-language training (7 years for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary science)
• College of Technology Students: 4 years including Japanese-language training (4.5 years for for Merchant marines studies)
• Specialized Training College Students: 3 years including Japanese-language training

Benefits (indicative information only):

• School examination, admission, and tuition fees are exempted
• Travel Cost: 1 round-trip
• Monthly Stipend:
  • Research students: up to ¥145,000 / month
  • Undergraduate students: around ¥117,000 / month

Application period: usually February – June every year.

Eligibility:

• Be 18 years o. minimum on the 1st Fabruary of the year of the commencing scholarship
• Be a citizen of a participating country (see list here), be a resident and apply from the country of the applicant citizenship
• Not be a citizen of Australian, or hold/being applicant of a permanent residency in Australia
• Not to be married to, engaged to a person eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency
• not be current serving military personnel
• Not have been awarded previously a long-term Australia Award unless having resided outside of Australia at least 2-times the length of the total time the applicant stayed in Australia.
• Meet the specific criteria established by the program area or Government of the applicant’s country of citizenship.
• Meet the admission requirement of the institution in which the award is to be attributed.
• Meet the requirement of the Department of home affairs to be attributed a Student visa.
• Not be applying for a scholarship for a course of study at an academic level lesser than already achieved

Selection Process:

Depends on the program and Country of the applicant.

Benefits:

• Full Tuition fees
• Return air travel–payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
• Establishment allowance (1-time payment)
• Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) – contribution to basic living expenses (rate determined by the department).
• Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only)–provided to cover the scholar’s basic medical costs (with the exception of pre-existing conditions)
• Pre-course English (PCE) fees–if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training
• Additional Academic support may be available to ensure a scholar’s academic success or enhance their academic experience
• Research Awards / Masters with a research component where fieldworks is compuslory: Fieldwork may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarships

Application period: usually beginning of the year-April every year.

The Government of Ireland provides around 60 students a 1-year scholarship for Bachelor, Master or PhD levels. The offer is open to students from non-EU/EEA countries and is applicable to all fields of study.

The scheme is managed by the Higher Education Authority (HEA), on behalf of the
Department of Education and Skills. Following a competitive process based on an
annual call for proposals from individual applicants, the HEA will approve a defined
number of scholarships under the scheme to successful applicants.

Benefits:

Students who are successful will receive:

• A €10,000 stipend for one year’s study
• A full fee waiver of all tuition and other registration costs at the higher education institution

Applicant profile

• Possess excellence (academically, personally, professionally, creatively);
• Excellent communication skills;
• Extra curriculum activities (for example: humanitarian work; politicslocal, national, international; arts; sports);
• Possess strong rationale for pursuing their study in Ireland that indicates
• how a GOI-IES fits into their longer-term goals.
