Western Sydney University supports higher degree research candidates with a range of scholarship opportunities. Research scholarships are released periodically and each type of scholarship has specific application dates, eligibility criteria and conditions.

The information below outlines the requirements for our scholarship releases. You are invited to submit an application for any scholarship where you meet the eligibility criteria and the application period is currently open.

The frequently asked questions below include important information about how to apply. We receive a very high volume of applications and scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis, so incomplete applications or those that do not meet the requirements may not be considered.

Master of Research International Scholarship
This scholarship provides support to international students commencing study in our Master of Research (MRes) program.The scholarships have an exclusive focus on topics related to “women and gender and sexuality diverse persons in the global south”. You will also be required to undertake an international engagement activity during your research studies. The engagement activity may be based on a pre-existing collaboration or a new collaboration. It might involve activities such as a virtual collaboration, an exchange of research skills and training, or data collection and processing.Your application must provide a Statement of Intent that explains how your proposed research will address the “women and gender and sexuality diverse persons in the global south” research field and international activity, and meet the requirements set out below.Successful applicants will receive a combined offer for a Master of Research (MRes)/Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), with the final PhD offer being determined by successfully meeting academic progression and eligibility criteria for the program.

Who can apply?International applicants that meet the following criteria:Have Average Admission Mark (AAM)(opens in new window)Opens in a new window of 85 or above;Provide a Statement of Intent(opens in new window)Opens in a new window that addresses:Your proposed research within the “women and gender and sexuality diverse persons in the global south” field.How your proposed research will include an international engagement activity in the thesis stage.Have evidence of professional experience which has contributed to your research skills or training and/or authorship in a peer-reviewed publication (non-predatory);Hold a Statement of Supervision Support(opens in new window)Opens in a new window from a Western Sydney University academic;Hold qualifications required to meet the criteria for direct admission(opens in new window)Opens in a new window into the Master of Research;Hold evidence of current English proficiency(opens in new window)Opens in a new window (e.g. IELTS 6.5, with no bands below 6.0);Can demonstrate strong academic performance in the area of research interest; andAre enthusiastic and highly motivated to undertake further study at an advanced level.
Scholarship inclusions:Scholarships include a stipend of $24,000(AUD) per annum for two (2) years.A tuition fee waiver will be awarded.
Scholarship exclusions:Scholarships do not include an Overseas Student Health Care (OSHC)(opens in new window)Opens in a new window insurance policy. This cost must be covered by the student and is required for the duration of study in Australia.Travel costs, visa costs, relocation expenses and other expenses are not covered by the scholarship.

Who can apply?Domestic applicants (Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian Permanent Residents) and international that have completed a Master of Research (MRes) degree at Western Sydney University in 2019, 2020 or 2021.You will receive an email invitation if you are considered eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Scholarship inclusions:Scholarships include a stipend of $30,000(AUD) per annum for three (3) years.For domestic students, tuition fees are covered by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP).For international students, a tuition fee waiver will be awarded.
