The ONE Planet DTP values individual differences and the diversity that this brings. We want to ensure that no-one is at a disadvantage because of who they are. We encourage applications from under-represented groups, and requests for flexible study (e.g. part-time) are welcomed.

We particularly welcome applications from diversity candidates who may fall into the four key areas below:

  • UK applicants who are Black, Chinese, Asian, Arabic, or of another non-white ethnicity
  • UK graduates from low-income families, and/or are from the first generation in their family to go to university
  • UK applicants who have caring responsibilities
  • UK applicants who have a disability (physical, neurodiverse etc.)

Applicants within the above categories will be prioritised for interview under our ‘diversity candidate’ nomination process.

Our Postgraduate researchers are based at the partner institution of your selected lead supervisor (Newcastle or Northumbria) and are also allocated a second supervisor at our partner institution, for us to provide you with joint supervision, and access to both campuses and online facilities.

Each of our studentship awards include 3.5 years of fees, an annual living allowance (£17,668) and a Research Training Support Grant (for travel, consumables, as required).

All PhD projects will be further defined and expanded by the students over the initial 6-month training period, which includes:

  • Training needs analysis
  • training in core modules
  • co-development of project with partners/supervisors following the annual Residential Activity Centre (RAC) in October

All applications will be assessed using the same criteria, mainly around the applicant’s academic and research experience. Applicants are expected to have a first or 2:1 undergraduate degree. Exceptions are possible, but these should be strongly motivated.

Projects are developed around at least 2 of the 4 ONE Planet research themes.
