Honjo International Scholarships for Graduate Students

Application period: From September 1, 2020 to October 31, 2020

The Honjo International Scholarship awards international students studying in Japanese graduate schools. 

Students who are enrolled in a Graduate School in Japan or have passed the Entrance examination test for a a degree can apply individually, and can apply from abroad, regardless the nationality or the field of studies.

A first selection will be made based on the documentation sent by the applicants, and pre-selected applicants will be interviewed (in Tokyo or by Skype)

Scholarship Benefits and Duration

The monthly allowance duration and amount depends on the studies duration.
For studies from 1 to 2 years, the awardee will receive a monthly amount of 200,000 Yen per month.
Up to 3 years the awardee will receive 180,000 yen per month, and for 4 years and over, the allowance will be 150,000 yen per month.

Application/selection schedule

September 1 – October 31, 2020 – Application period

January 31, 2020 – Announcement of the applicants documents screening results

February 2021 – Interview period

March 31, 2021 – Announcement of the final results

How to apply

  • Check the eligibility requirements in the Guideline(PDF 128KB) Template of research plan (WORD 14KB)
  • Enter the required information from the <Scholarship Web Application System> and upload the required documents.
  • After the application is completed, you will receive a receipt number and the application will be automatically created with the contents uploaded. Please save the application file and remember the number you are given. It will be posted on the website during the announcement of the final results for successful applicants.

        yeah and I am sorry I have two questions please;
        1) Do applicants for Bachelor degrees allowed to apply for that program?
        2) You should have to apply for the university separately or you can apply for the program and they can plan your university?

          Dear Abdillah: You need to be going in a Graduate School for this program. The application for the scholarship is made separately.

      So far there is no restrictions in the chosen field of study. You will have to find a school/university in Japan that proposes the course you are looking for first.

      Dear Janet, it seems so:
      “to be eligible, the student applying for the PhD program must start the PhD course by the age of 35.
      Student applying for the master’s program must start the master course by the age of 30.”
      So if you wish to apply for the master, you should be max. 30 y.o.

      Dear Melchior,
      Though any field of study is welcomed, you need to be registered in a Japanese graduate school to be eligible.

    Hi thank you for the information, noted that the date has passed. I only need to confirm for future application. The website for Honjo ISF has not stated if the amount is given as a lumpsum for everything. Does it mean that the tuition and accommodation fees are not covered separately (like the one in MEXT)?
