International Undergraduate Student Bursary

What is the IUSB?

The International Undergraduate Student Bursary is a non-repayable grant paid directly into students’ financial customer accounts to pay outstanding tuition.

Selection for the bursary is based on demonstrated financial need. Preference is given to students in their final year of study who provide sufficient documentation of extenuating circumstances.

Who can apply?

Undergraduate international students who experience an unanticipated financial shortfall due to extenuating circumstances.

How to apply?

To apply, log into Application for Financial Support and click “Apply” in the International Undergraduate Student Bursary section at the bottom of the page. Please ensure to completely answer all the required questions.

Application deadline: 23:59:59 (Mountain Standard Time), Friday, July 17, 2020.

Please note: New IUSB applications will not be accepted after the application deadline. The application system is automated and closes automatically, thereby rejecting any application submissions after the deadline. You can continue to complete your application, and upload your supporting documents, right up to the deadline of 12:00 pm (Mountain Standard Time), Tuesday, August 4, 2020.

Eligibility

At the time of application, applicants must:

  • Be an international student in an undergraduate program leading to a degree at the University of Alberta
  • Have completed a minimum of 48 credits of a 120-credit program in Canada by the end of April 2020
  • Be eligible to register in Fall 2020 term (Students who have completed their program requirements in April 2020 are not eligible)
  • Be currently paying international student differential fees
  • Be in year 3or 4 of their study
  • Have satisfactory academic standing
  • Have a valid study permit
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Be available for an online interview with an International Student Advisor, July 6 – August 14, 2020 
  • Students have not previously received the IUSB

Please note, the following students may be deemed ineligible:

  • Students who will be in the first or second year of their program in Fall 2020
  • Students who have previously received an IUSB non-repayable grant 
  • Students who are in a one- or two-year after degree program
  • Transfer students who completed 2 or more years of study outside Canada 
     

Note: Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate a minimum contribution of $3,000 saved from their previous employment.  

Evaluations are based on:

  • Extenuating issues or conditions made evident through sufficient supporting documentation (please see “Supporting Documents” below for more information on the type of documents required)
  • Level of student contribution (at least $3,000 saved from previous employment)
  • Level of parental contribution
  • Tuition payment plan for the duration of studies
  • Terms left to complete studies
  • Supporting documentation provided
  • Student’s level of an unanticipated financial shortfall

Applications will be adjudicated following the IUSB assessment criteria.

Supporting Documents 

This application will require you to provide several supporting documents that help us in our assessment of your eligibility for the IUSB funding. Read each question in the application carefully and provide the required supporting documents. 

Here are some examples of the required documents:

“Essays” Section: 

  • You will be asked to list all money amounts received from your family/sponsor from the start of your program until now, including your deposit dates. You will also be required to provide copies of your bank statements which show these amounts/dates. You are required to provide pdf copies of the relevant pages of your bank statements only that have this information making sure that these deposited amounts are highlighted.
  • You will be asked to describe details of the change/extenuating circumstances that have negatively affected you financially. Supporting documents for this section may include death certificate of financial provider, medical reports, a letter from financial provider’s previous employer confirming, termination of employment, financial statements of provider’s business account, etc.

After you Apply

Students who are deemed eligible and those who are considered to be ineligible will be notified by email by August 18, 2020.

Eligible students can expect payment to be reflected in their student financial account according to the timelines below:

  • Eligible students with outstanding tuition from previous terms: payment will be made before the Fall add/drop deadline to allow you to register for Fall term courses. When applicable, any unused funds will be paid after the Fall add/drop deadline]
  • Eligible students with no outstanding tuition from previous terms: payment will be made after the Fall add/drop deadline
