Fully Funded! Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick Scholarship (Low-Middle income countries) 2023-24, London, UK

Deadline for applications: 16 April 2023

A bequest to the School, by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick’s daughters Elsie and Daphne Kirkpatrick, endowed funding to set up scholarships ‘for the promotion and encouragement of study in the ophthalmic section’ in memory of their father.

Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick (1871–1958) was interested in ophthalmology from fairly early in his career. His career in the Indian Medical Service provided opportunities – through work in the General Hospital, Madras, the university and the Government Ophthalmic Hospital – to improve teaching and postgraduate training in pathology and ophthalmology. On retiring from Madras he was ophthalmic surgeon to the Tropical Diseases Hospital and lecturer in ophthalmology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Eligibility for funding

This scholarship is open to all overseas applicants who hold an LSHTM offer of admission for the MSc Public Health for Eye Care course.

Preference will be given to applicants from low to lower-middle income countries.

How to apply

The application process has two steps. To be considered for the funding, applicants must meet all eligibility criteria and complete both steps outlined below by the scholarship deadline of 23:59 (BST) on Sunday 16 April 2023.

Step 1:

Submit a 2023-24 application for study for the MSc Public Health for Eye Care, as per instructions under the ‘How to Apply’ tab. Applicants should ensure that all necessary supplementary documents (including references) are submitted via the School’s Admissions Portal by the scholarship deadline.

Applicants offered admission to an LSHTM MSc programme must provide evidence that they meet the LSHTM English Language requirements before they can begin their studies. Applicants for this funding should be able to show that they have taken steps to meet this requirement (such as organising a date for the test) by the time this award is being shortlisted (May 2023). Please contact Romulo Fabunan if you have any questions regarding the LSHTM English Language requirement.

(Applicants who have already submitted a completed 2023-24 London-based MSc Public Health for Eye Care MSc application for study and/or have been made an offer of admission for the 2023-24 London-based MSc Public Health for Eye Care should apply for the scholarship by completing the scholarship application (Step 2) and submitting this by the deadline.)

Step 2:

Submit an online scholarships application, selecting the ‘2023-24 Lt Col Henry Kirkpatrick Scholarship’ option from the drop-down menu. A completed 2023-24 Supplementary Questions Form for this scholarship must be uploaded as part of this application. This is the only attachment required in Step 2 (as applicants should have already submitted references; transcripts; a CV etc with their application for study).

Application notes

Whilst it is recognised that some candidates may have dependents whom they wish to bring with them to London, the Lieutenant Colonel Henry Kirkpatrick Scholarship is unable to provide support beyond that stated above for either stipend or accommodation and is not able to make provision for anyone accompanying the student.

By applying for this funding applicants agree to its Terms & Conditions. (We would encourage applicants to read the Application and Admission section, and links, through before beginning an application for funding.)

Please note that all applications will only be reviewed and processed after the deadline. All applications that are submitted before the deadline will be considered equally, regardless of submission date.

Decisions will be reached, and the successful applicant notified, before 26 May 2023.
