Summary

Up to four scholarships are available to UK and International applicants applying to study a PhD within the Marketing Department of Leeds University Business School. Three scholarships will be available for our October 2023 intake and one will be available for our February 2024 intake. Doctoral research students in marketing will develop the ability to pursue research that advances the frontiers of the marketing discipline and solves business and marketing problems using advanced research tools and techniques. They will learn how to derive implications from their research results and communicate their findings to policy makers, practitioners, and academics.

The PhD programme supports doctoral research students and enables them to develop skills in analysis of different types of data using a range of techniques and approaches. Furthermore, doctoral research students are expected to attend and participate in seminars, workshops, and conferences organised by the Marketing Department, more widely within Leeds University Business School and the Doctoral College. This helps expose doctoral research students to new research ideas and practices and create a stimulating environment for innovative thinking and impactful scholarly research.

Information about the Award

  • This competition is open to home and international and applicants. Up to one scholarship will be awarded in this round.

Duration of the Award

  • Full-time (3.5 years). The award will be made for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further period of up to two and a half years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Funding

  • The award will cover full fees at the University of Leeds standard rate of fees.
  • A maintenance grant at the standard UKRI rate (£17,668 in Session 2022/23).

Other Conditions

  • Applicants must not have already been awarded or be currently studying for a doctoral degree.
  • Awards must be taken up by 1st February 2024.
  • The awards are available for new Postgraduate Researchers undertaking full-time or part-time research study leading to the degree of PhD. Students who are already registered for PhD research study are excluded from applying.
  • Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this Scholarship.

How to apply

Stage 1: First, apply for a research place of study by completing a study application form. You will be expected to meet our eligibility criteria for PhD candidates, including the English language requirements if your first language is not English. Once you have received your student ID number (a 9-digit number) move onto stage 2.

Stage 2: Apply for the Leeds University Business School Marketing Department scholarship by working your way through the scholarship application form.

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence that you meet the Faculty’s minimum English language requirements.

Entry requirements

Candidates should ideally have a first-class or at least a good upper second-class undergraduate degree. Candidates should hold a British Masters degree (or equivalent degree from an overseas university) or an equivalent professional qualification:

with a minimum average score of 60 percent (or equivalent); and in an appropriate academic discipline.

English language requirements

On all research degree programmes a pass in an approved test in English is required for applicants whose first language is not English. The approved tests and minimum required scores are detailed below. Please note that test scores are valid for 2 years.

IELTS (Academic) Overall score of at least 7.0 with no less than 6.0 in each section.

TOEFL iBT We require an overall test result of 100 with the following minimum scores required in each of these sections: Listening 21, Reading 21, Speaking 23, Writing 22.
