University of Washington need-based scholarships for new, transfer students to study in the USA

The Mechanical Engineering Department awards a number of merit and need-based scholarships for new, transfer, and continuing majors. Each year, dozens of students receive scholarships in varying amounts totaling over $400,000. Students apply online between April 1 and May 1 for awards the following academic year. Need-based scholarships require submitting a prior FAFSA application. Transfer students, even if not admitted by May 1, should apply for our scholarships if needed. Awards will be contingent on admission to the Mechanical Engineering program.

In addition, the department regularly posts scholarship announcements from industry and professional associations to all admitted students on BSME News.

Other Scholarships Opportunities:

  • College of Engineering Scholarships: The College of Engineering offers a variety of annual scholarships for engineering-undeclared students.
  • Mary Gates Scholarship: The Mary Gates Endowment for Students funds hundreds of undergraduates each year, supporting student research, leadership and venture activities.
  • UW Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards: Assistance for students navigating the scholarship search and application process, especially for nationally recognized merit-based scholarships such as the Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall and more.
