Description
Supervisor – Dr Anna Jenkins
There is an opportunity for a highly motivated graduate student to work on a project in the business and economics of targeted drugs and diagnostic agents with the Australian Research Council Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology.
Traditionally, the high cost of drug development has led to a focus on ‘blockbuster drugs’ for large patient groups to maximise return on investment. Targeted diagnostics, therapeutics and theranostics (combined therapeutic and diagnostic agents) are a paradigm shift because they are designed for well-defined disease subgroups, which may be small, making it more difficult to recoup development costs through sales. The steep cost of clinical trials, coupled with regulatory burden, is a major factor driving economic decisions on whether to proceed with drug development.
Projects in this area address the important question on the commercialisation of drug development for targeted agents. Candidates will be able to select a research topic aligned with ongoing research. Projects may fall within the overall research areas of health economics, innovation or strategy related to targeted drugs and diagnostic agents, as agreed with the supervisors.
Research environment
The Australian Research Council Training Centre for Innovation in Biomedical Imaging Technology (CIBIT (www.cibit.org.au)) is a multidisciplinary collaboration between researchers at The University of Queensland and medical technology and pharmaceutical industry partners.
CIBIT aims to provide research training to close critical skills gaps and to undertake industry-driven research to overcome bottlenecks in the development and application of novel diagnostics, therapeutics and theranostics and to inform changes in regulatory policy that support industry growth.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with industry partners and undertake an industry placement for one year.
