The Milton Toubkin Scholarship at Southbank International School, UK
Applications for our scholarship for the 2020/2021 academic year will open December 2019.
The scholarship is named after our founder, Milton Toubkin, who in 1979, created his vision of ‘a school without walls’. Toubkin envisaged a school that was not only ‘without walls’ in the physical sense, but also perhaps more significantly, in the abstract sense, as a state of mind. To quote Toubkin directly, “the most important walls to escape from are those that surround our minds. Those are the walls that prevent us from seeing, and more importantly experiencing what goes on outside. A school without walls means that we know that we don’t know everything, we are constantly in search of knowledge, we are not afraid of something new or different, we are willing to risk failure. It means not always going for the easy option.”
It is this concept that set Southbank up to be the dynamic, inquiring and open-minded institution that it is today.
The aim of the scholarship
The aim of the scholarships are to enable two gifted and deserving students to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Southbank International School. The scholarships are a two-year award, dependent on a student’s sustained performance and progression, beginning in Grade 11 and finishing in Grade 12, when the students graduate.
What the scholarship covers
The scholarship awards cover up 100% of the school’s tuition fees and up to 50% of the school’s capital development fees for the duration of the scholarship programmes. During the two years, the scholarship student’s family will still be wholly responsible for any other financial commitments, which include, but are not limited to, the £2,000 refundable deposit, annual PTA (Parent Teacher Association) fees, cost of residential events, and the IB Diploma exam fees. Candidates must be living at home with at least one family member, and must be available for an interview (either in person in London or via Skype).
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The scholarships are aimed at new students; currently enrolled or former students of Southbank International School are not eligible. For the duration of the Diploma Programme, the scholarship students must have the appropriate immigration status to be enrolled at the school, and have a reasonable daily commute between home and school.
All applicants wishing to be considered for the scholarships must fully meet or exceed all of the following criteria:
- Above average academic achievement and potential;
- Evidence of extra-curricular interests and activities;
- Commitment to Southbank and to the International Baccalaureate curriculum;
- Commitment to qualities and behaviours consistent with the IB Learner Profile;
- High standard of academic English (applicants will be required to take an online English test).

- A Personal Statement outlining your reasons for applying and why you believe you should be selected for the scholarship
- An up to date Curriculum Vitae
- Student Essays – Two handwritten essays (max 500 words each) with the following titles: “How can good come out of a bad experience?” and “What I hope to offer as a student to Southbank International School”
- Three teacher references – one from the student’s Math teacher, one from the Science teacher and one from the English teacher using Southbank’s official online form
- School reports – from the last 2 years, translated into English if applicable and combined in pfd.
- Any relevant supporting documents – this can include test results, educational psychologist reports, medical information, special learning needs, assessment results, etc
- Scanned copy of passport
Where English is not your mother tongue, you will be sent a link to an online English test for you to complete, unassisted, during the week commencing 28th January 2019.
