You must be a graduate (holder of a degree) of a Canadian university when tenure of the scholarship begins.

Application Processes

Applications must be made to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of your home university*. This is the Canadian university from which you most recently graduated or at which you are currently enrolled. You may apply for both scholarships (Travelling, Open) with a single application if the eligibility criteria are met for both. Please note that these scholarships are for the upcoming academic year (2019-2020).

UBC Okanagan students: Please mail your complete paper application directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies at the Vancouver campus (mailing address is listed at the bottom of this webpage).

A complete paper application package, mailed to the attention of the “Mackenzie King Scholarships Competition”, must be received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (UBC Vancouver) by 4:00pm on Friday, 1 February 2019. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

A complete paper application consists of the following:

  • The completed and signed application form (including attached sheets A and B as described on that form).
    • Note: A printed copy with original signature (in ink) is required.
  • Three letters of reference:
    • The letters should be from persons who have an intimate knowledge of your record and ability and are able to give a critical evaluation of your plans for graduate study.
    • At least two of these testimonials must be from persons under whom you have taken your major work at university, or from senior colleagues with whom you have been associated in academic teaching or research.
    • Note: Reference letters must include the author’s original signature (in ink) and should be on official letterhead and in a sealed envelope.
  • Official, up-to-date transcripts from for all post-secondary studies
    • These may be original transcripts (in a sealed envelope from the institution) or “certified true” copies (provided by your UBC graduate program). Please note that applicants must request “certified true” copies of transcripts from their graduate program, not from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
    • Applicants should provide transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies, including studies that did not lead to a degree.
    • UBC transcripts for all students with UBC grades: the applicant’s “Academic History” printed from the SISC by the applicant’s graduate program will be accepted.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials (including transcripts and reference letters) are received by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the deadline. Applicants are advised to:

  • Collect and then mail all their application materials together in one package.
  • Applicants should arrange for their transcripts and reference letters to be sent to themselves (not directly to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) to add to their application package. Envelopes containing transcripts and reference letters must not be opened by the applicant, but must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in their original, sealed envelopes from the issuing institution or graduate program (transcripts) and referee (reference letters).
  • When requesting transcripts and reference letters, ask that the address clearly indicate that the materials are for the “Mackenzie King Scholarships competition.”
