The East-West Center is partnering with Giant Steps Music to create Music Action Lab Pacific, a leadership development program to create original music and a global community of musical leaders and peacebuilders. The program will bring together talented musicians from across the Pacific from June 1-30, 2020 in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, to create “social impact music” addressing climate change and cultural resilience while building musicians’ capacity to become agents of change in their home communities.
Music Action Lab Pacific is a collaborative intercultural platform to facilitate learning, sharing, and creating artistry, music, identities, histories, and cultures; finding common ground; and recognizing and understanding differences. The month-long residency combines creative collaboration with artistic innovation to produce original work and new approaches to climate change, cultural resilience, and collaborative problem-solving.
Qualified applicants are:
- Musicians of the Pacific Islands (resident or diaspora), including Aotearoa, Australia, and Hawai’i (Kanaka Maoli and Kama‘āina). Indigenous artists are encouraged to apply.
- Talented musicians with a passion for, dedication to, or track record of using music to improve a community and create social impact
- Able to participate in the entirety of the June 1-30, 2020 residency
- Between the ages of 24 and 40
- Curious, open-minded, and willing to learn from and collaborate with artists with diverse backgrounds
