Translation/translator or translator-reviser (Asian Languages) Profile

If you are a professional translator/reviser with several years of experience translating from Chinese, Japanese, or Korean into English, we would like to hear from you.

WIPO employs Asian language translators mainly in the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) Translation Division, which is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the PCT.

In the role of Translator or Translator-Reviser, you will work in teams responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions. 

Education and Experience requirements – P4 level Translator-Reviser

Education

Essential
Advanced university degree in a technical or scientific field, translation or modern languages, or in a related field. A first-level university degree in one of the aforementioned subjects plus an additional two years of relevant professional experience in addition to the essential experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience

Essential
For an advanced university degree, seven years, and for a first-level university degree, nine years, of relevant professional experience, mainly in technical or scientific translation. A candidate with less than seven years but more than four years of relevant experience and holding an advanced university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade. A candidate with less than nine years but more than six years of relevant experience and holding a first-level university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.

Essential

First-level university degree or equivalent in translation, modern languages, linguistics, in a scientific or technical field or in a related field. An advanced university degree in a relevant field may be taken in lieu of two years of experience.

Desirable

Advanced university degree in translation, a scientific or technical field or in a related field.

Experience

Essential     

At least six years of relevant professional experience, mainly in the translation and self-revision of technical and scientific texts.

Desirable
Experience in translation in a technical or scientific field, or in the field of intellectual property

Essential
Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge (first working language) of one of the following: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, French, German, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish)Job Related Competencies

Advanced translation, revision, editing, and quality assessment skills, with an ability to produce accurate and idiomatically correct translations in line with established translation guidelines

Good knowledge of translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process

Annual salary:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the November 2019 rate of 76.7%.
