POLITICAL AFFAIRS OFFICER WITH UNITED NATIONS IN NEW YORK, USA

This post is found within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at Headquarters. This post is in the Team supporting the implementation of Security Council resolution 2231 (2015). The team reports to the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch (SCSOB) of the Security Council Affairs Division (SCAD). Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Subsidiary Organs Branch, the incumbent reports directly to a Senior Political Officer. SCSOB provides support to subsidiary bodies established by the Security Council, particularly sanctions committees and groups/panels of experts who assist them in overseeing sanctions regimes.Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

•Conducts research and advise in support of DPPA’s work, in particular, preparations for the Secretary-General’s reports as mandated in UN Security Council resolution 2231 (2015).

•Prepares analytical reports and summaries on sensitive matters of concern to the Security Council and other bodies; drafts notes, background papers, talking points, speeches and other correspondence for senior UN officials.

•Acts as focal point for collection and analyses of information on technical issues of assignment.

• Reviews and monitors activities on the agenda of the Security Council and related to the maintenance of international peace and security, and assesses trends which might affect the political situation and the political impact of intra-regional issues.

•Analyses political and related events on the agenda of the Security Council with a view to providing early warning advice to ASG/USG or other senior officials.

•Arranges and participates in missions away from Headquarters.

•Meets regularly with operational teams including UN staff, Members of the Security Council, and Member States to brief them on the procedures, practices and working methods of the Council.

•Provides up-to-date information to senior officials regarding substantive political matters related to the maintenance of international peace and security and makes recommendations on actions to take.

•Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international and regional organizations, and governments on coordination and policy matters; briefs representatives and provides, as appropriate suggestions and recommendations.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, aerospace engineering or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, non-proliferation, ballistic missile proliferation or related area is required.

Research and analytical experience related to ballistic missiles, cruise missiles or uncrewed aerial vehicles, including identification and tracing of components and subcomponents, is required.

Experience working in an international organization is desirable.

Experience in preparing reports to intergovernmental bodies or Executive Boards is desirable.

Experience in monitoring and reporting on implementation of Security Council resolutions is desirable.Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.Assessment
