Murdoch University Professor ST Leong Memorial Scholarship in Australia 2022

​This scholarship was established in memory of Sow-Theng Leong, Professor of Asian Studies at Murdoch University from 1985 to 1987, and aims to promote academic excellence in the study of Asian languages and cultures. Professor Leong was born in 1939 in Malaysia and received his university education at Brandeis and Harvard Universities. He held teaching and research posts at the University of Malaysia, the International Christian University in Tokyo, Australian National University and Melbourne University before taking up his post at Murdoch.

The scholarship is intended to help finance study in South East Asia, China or Japan. Study in the region may include language study or research at honours or postgraduate level.

Eligibility

To apply for this scholarship you must:  

  • be enrolled in a major, co-major or honours which involves field study in Asia, with priority to:
    • Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) (B1316/B1316A or H1256), 
    • Bachelor of Arts (Indonesian) (B1316/B1316A), 
    • Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) (B1316/B1316A), 
    • ​Bachelor of Asian Studies (Specialist) at either undergraduate or honours level,
      OR 
    • a postgraduate degree that requires travel to Asia for study of an Asian topic.

Level of study:  Undergraduate  Honours

Required Documents

​This scholarship requires you to provide the following documents:

  • completed application form
  • a personal statement of up to two A4 pages maximum outlining: 
  • study proposal, including dates of travel 
  • information regarding any other scholarships or bursaries that you are in receipt of (or that are under consideration) for your studies
  • how the scholarship will assist you to budget for the overseas travel.
  • a written reference from up to two current or former academic referees or employers
  • postgraduate and honours students only: academic transcript of your previous studies if you did not complete your undergraduate degree at Murdoch. 

Payment Method

One $2,500 instalment to assist with travel and living expenses in Asia, in week 7 or 8 of a Semester (S1 or S2)
