Detailed Project Description
This is an exciting opportunity to join a Higher Education Authority/ North South Research Programme, called Atlantic Futures. It offers exceptional possibilities to collaborate with other university researchers, business and policy makers across the West of Ireland – north and south, and to contribute to a large-scale project with impact on business and policy. The position offers an excellent opportunity to pursue a career in academia, consulting, public policy or industry. The funding includes stipend and fees as well as generous allowances for research travel, training and equipment.
There are three PhD positions (University of Galway, University of Limerick, and Ulster University), and this position is located in the University of Limerick. It will investigate business scaling in the Atlantic Corridor. Successfully candidates will be part of multi-site team investigating the challenge of business scaling within business enterprises. This opportunity is a perfect pathway for those considering a career in business academia, and to be part of team of researchers. Professor Esther Tippman (University of Galway), Professor Kristel Miller (University of Ulster), and Dr. Conor Carroll (University of Limerick) are the principal investigators of this Atlantic Futures work package initiative.
Scaling a business is a complex task and scaling a business from the western edge of the westernmost landmass in Europe brings additional challenges, but also opportunities. The PhD studies will involve developing case studies of indigenous and foreign-owned businesses that have successfully scaled in the West of Ireland (north and south), focusing specifically on the issues involved in scaling products, markets, teams and processes, practices for their effective resolution, and scaling-specific supports to enable scaling success from the West of Ireland. It will include a regional dimension of business scaling.
This position at University of Limerick is affiliated with the Dept of Management & Marketing at the Kemmy Business School. The PhD student will be enrolled on the PhD programme and supervised by Dr. Conor Carroll. The successful candidate will then draft a detailed research proposal to be adjudicated by KBS research committee for enrollment onto the PhD programme.
While working as part of a cross-institutional team, the successful candidates will be affiliated with one institution, here University of Limerick. Each position will be dedicated to covering a distinct area of business scaling in the Atlantic Corridor. The indicative topics, that may evolve to fit candidate expertise and project needs, include:
– Micro-perspective: the role of founders, teams and people in scaling.
– Meso-perspective: organisation and firm factors, esp. internationalisation in scaling.
– Macro-perspective: external (regional) supports.
Benefits
Living allowance (Stipend): €23,500 per annum [tax-exempt scholarship award]. Computer equipment and funding for travel (e.g. to conferences) will be provided in addition to the stipend. Four years funding is in place for programme.
University fees: €5,600 per annum [fees for EU students] are paid for through the funding.
Start date: 1st September 2023
Academic Entry Requirements: Masters degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification). Other evidence that signifies suitability for the programme.
Candidates should demonstrate (essential requirements):
– Normally a Masters degree to honours standard (or equivalent international qualification) in a relevant area, such as Business, Management, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, or Social Sciences
– Honours 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant area, such as Business, Management, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, or Social Sciences
– Experience of independent research
– Excellent written and oral communication skills
– Highly self-motivated
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team
– Willingness to travel
