Fulbright Scholarship Program for English Teaching Assistant Awards
Accepted Degree LevelsBachelor’s Master’s | Grant Period10 Months | PDOMandatory |
Award Profile
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program places Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the United States.
Prior teaching experience is not required but helpful. It’s important to note that ETAs are not full‐fledged professors, the program is a professional development opportunity for them to advance their teaching skills and have a positive experience in the host country. There will be additional responsibilities of teaching in the U.S. Embassy American Center and the U.S. funded English Access Microscholarship Program.
The ETAs will be placed in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Although the official language is Khmer, the Cambodian youth are thirsty for knowledge and see English as the language of opportunity for success in higher education and future employment. The Cambodians are friendly and welcoming and eager to share their traditions, culture and food with visitors. With 75% of the population below the age of 35, there will be many opportunities to exchange ideas on environmental issues, human rights, and gender equality.
Grant Period
10 Months
All grantees are required to begin their grants in early October 2021 in order to attend the in-country orientation program. English Teaching Assistants will be placed at their host institutions from October 2021 through August 2022 to meet the Cambodian school year requirements.
Pre-Departure Orientation
Mandatory
ETAs are required to fully participate in a Pre-Departure Orientation in the United States organized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) in the summer.
Arrival Orientation
Mandatory
ETAs are required to participate in the one-week in-country orientation organized by the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section (PAS). The orientation program helps ETAs understand how the Embassy works, learn about the educational and cultural programs PAS manage, familiarize with Cambodia’s cultures, and learn some basic English teaching skills/resources.
Candidate Profile
Self-motivation, flexibility, creativity and autonomy are keys to a successful project. While ETAs are supported by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, they are expected to problem-solve and operate independently to the extent that they can. ETAs are also expected to be cultural ambassadors and promote mutual understanding between people of the United States and Cambodia. ETAs must be willing to learn and respect new cultures and are expected to demonstrate high levels of professionalism.
