Under the overall supervision of the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences and the direct supervision of the Chief, Executive Office, the incumbent will develop and implement the Natural Sciences Sector’s communication strategy and be responsible for developing creative content and advancing a compelling and consistent description of action around the Natural Sciences programme. He/she will manage the production of SC reports of global scope and publications as well as website related products.,

The incumbent works within the frameworks of UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy (C/4s), the approved Programme and Budget (C/5) and global development plans. In particular, the incumbent will:

Long Description

  • Develop Natural Science Sector‘s communication strategy and maintain strong working relationships with key media organizations, editors and journalists.
  • Develop media materials including Q&As, press releases, statements on ongoing emergencies in close consultation with Field Offices.
  • Be sensitive to trends in the world of information and communication technologies.
  • Advise the Sector Management Team and staff as well as Country & Regional Offices on options of strategy orientation for communication.
  • Advise and educate new and potential donors on the strategy, design, relevance and impact of UNESCO programme, in particular, to advocate the work of Natural Sciences.
  • Plan, organize and supervise the publication and communication work of the Natural Sciences Sector including the process of designing and updating website of the Sector.
  • Advise Sector management on editorial matters and represent the interests of the Natural Sciences Sector in policy discussions within the editorial function.
  • Provide input, participate in production of communication materials online and offline, and particularly enhance the link between outreach and partnerships etc….
  • Act as an editor/coordinator of SC reports of global importance, developing and executing the concept and budget, managing human resources and mobilizing funds; implement plans for the different Reports and participate in intersectoral working Groups.
  • Coordinate and lead the team and supervise the work of junior staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in information and communication sciences, arts or journalism.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive relevant professional experience in the area of communication, of which preferably 3 years acquired at international level.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in editorial domain.
  • Experience of progressive responsibility in the development and implementation of communication and media strategies and plans.
  • Proven experience in promoting science communication.
  • Proven experience in media relations, writing and publishing articles and press releases.

Skills/Competencies

  • Proven technical and functional skills in strategy planning in the field of information and communication, event organization, including performance monitoring and evaluation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent command of website management, newsletter publishing and social media management.
  • Good knowledge of multimedia and graphics software, digital communication tools, content management systems, MS Office software applications and digital work environments.
  • Proven skills in developing institutional communication strategy and concept formulation.
  • Excellent mastery of the editorial chain in order to understand the issues and constraints at each stage of the process.
  • Excellent command of information and communication tools as well as collaborative tools such as blogs, wiki or social networks.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams and delegate tasks.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Skills/Competencies

  • Expertise in the use of the following tools: Drupal-based web portals; mass-mailing platforms and Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) software, particularly Adobe illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Languages

  • Knowledge of other UNESCO official languages (Chinese, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian)
