This scholarship is for a new MPhil/PhD research student in the field of history (broadly defined) who is applying for a MPhil/PhD in the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy in any of the School’s departments:
- Department of Geography
- Department of History, Classics and Archaeology
- Department of Philosophy
- Department of Politics
- Department of Psychosocial Studies.

ABOUT THE FUNDER
The studentship is made possible due to a very generous legacy donation from Margery Boughton, an alumna of the College.
The awarded projects alternate between history (broadly defined) and interdisciplinary projects each round. For this round, it is dedicated to an interdisciplinary project.
GUIDANCE FOR APPLICANTS
VALUE OF AWARD
- The studentship waives Home/EU fees for the MPhil/PhD degree and offers an annual stipend set at Research Council rates (£19,668 per year for 2022-23).
- Full-time studentships are for up to three years (subject to satisfactory progress).
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- You must be a new Home/EU or International student, applying for a MPhil/PhD degree in a department within the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy.
- The studentships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.
- The proposed project must be interdisciplinary in subject and approach.
HOW TO APPLY
- You need to apply to, and secure a place on, an MPhil/PhD degree run by the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, which includes submitting a research proposal by 31 January 2023. See the ‘how to apply’ section on each programme page for full details and guidance.
- You also need to apply separately for the studentship by completing the scholarship application form and emailing the completed form to the SSHP postgraduate research team no later than 31 January 2023.
- We will only consider currently enrolled MPhil/PhD research students within the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy under exceptional circumstances.
- Please send a brief supporting email, outlining these exceptional circumstances, when you submit the scholarship application form.

- The closing date for 2023-24 applications: Tuesday 31 January 2023.
