Australian Government Research Training Program scholarships, 2023-24
Deadline for applications: 3 March 2023
Students who have applied for admission to a higher degree by research (HDR) and selected the relevant box in the application form will be considered for this scholarship.
The Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are provided by the Australian government to support both domestic and international students undertaking postgraduate research degrees.

Types of scholarships:
- RTP Fees Offset Scholarships: offered to domestic students with an unconditional offer to undertake a higher degree by research course at the University of Sydney. This scholarship is supported by the Australian government and provides tuition fees.
- RTP Stipend Scholarships: awarded to students of exceptional research potential to undertake a higher degree by research at an Australian university. These Australian government scholarships are provided to assist with general living costs.
- University of Sydney Postgraduate Awards (UPA): similar to the RTP Scholarships in terms of tenure and benefits. Eligible RTP applicants are automatically considered for these awards.

RTP Scholarship (International)
Types of scholarships:
- RTP Scholarship scheme: funded by the Australian Government, this scholarship provides tuition fees offset and stipend to high quality international postgraduate students who wish to enrol in a research degree at Australian universities. Applications are assessed on academic merit and research potential.

How to apply
RTP stipend scholarships are awarded in November, February and June. Therefore, you must submit all required documentations for your admission application, and Research Experience evidence (if applicable) to be considered in the relevant award timeline. Please note that you may be notified of your RTP scholarship outcome at a different time to receiving your offer of study.
To be considered for a scholarship, you must:
- complete your application for admission in postgraduate research to the relevant faculty, and select the checkbox to be considered for research scholarships
- ensure your application includes all relevant supporting documents, referring to the RTP/UPA applicant information pack and research experience guide and evidence template (see related documents below).
If you are a current student at the University of Sydney, you will need to apply for the scholarship here.
Honours students, whose results have not yet been released can submit their Masters by Research/MPhil or PhD admission application and elect to be considered for RTP. RTP applications will be put on hold until the students have provided the Scholarships Office with their final Honours transcript. Final honours transcript can be sent via email or uploaded to the online document submission portal.
Unsuccessful applicants are encouraged to reapply if their situation changes (such as the publication of an article or further related professional experience).

*New students must complete the RTP submission, along with their course application, by the submission deadline. Current HDR students will need to submit a separate application.
Current students must refer to the relevant document submission date for international or domestic cohorts to be considered in the relevant upcoming rounds. For example, currently enrolled international students must submit their documents by 30 September 2020 to receive an outcome in November 2020.
If you have elected to be considered for RTP scholarship, please ensure you submit your admissions application and all mandatory documents by 31 October (Refer to our correspondences in regards missing documents) in order to receive RTP scholarship outcome in December 2022. Submission after 31 October may result your scholarship application being considered in May 2023.
