University of Wollongong International Postgraduate Tuition Awards (IPTA)
International Postgraduate Tuition Awards (IPTAs) are awarded to cover HDR students’ tuition fees in certain circumstances. IPTAs can be offered in three different circumstances:
- Full Course IPTA;
- Final Session IPTA; and
- Financial Hardship IPTA.
Eligible programs: Doctoral degrees and Masters of Philosophy

APPLICATIONS DUE TO DELAYS CAUSED BY THE IMPACT OF COVID19
If your research was impeded by COVID 19, and you are in your final session of study you may apply for an extension to your candidature.
All applications must include the following:
- Up to two page statement detailing the impact of COVID19 on your progress and how you have worked to mitigate the impact;
- Copy of your Contingency Plan and/or your APR from 2020; and
- Supporting statement from your Principal Supervisor.
Full Course IPTA
International students who are awarded a stipend scholarship (equivalent to the value of the current UPA stipend) will also be offered a Full Course IPTA to cover their tuition up to 4.0 EFTSL for Doctoral degrees and 2.0 EFTSL for Master of Philosophy degrees.
Final Session IPTA
Available to international students seeking a final session IPTA in order to complete their thesis. A Final Session IPTA also applies to international students who have accrued an EFTSL (Equivalent Full Time Study Load) of >4.0 for doctoral degrees and >2.0 for Master of Philosophy degrees which classifies them as overtime in their studies.
Students should consult their supervisor regarding a final session IPTA and provide evidence that they are near completion of their thesis. If the supervisor supports the claim, s/he will need to submit an application to the Graduate Research School on, or prior to, the due date for the relevant session.
The Dean of Graduate Research will assess all applications after the session due date and refer to the selection criteria in the HDR Scholarship Policy.

Autumn Session: 27 February
Spring Session: 27 July
Please note late applications will not be considered.
Financial Hardship IPTA
Available to international students seeking an IPTA for one session due to financial hardship. Students should consult their supervisor regarding a financial hardship IPTA and provide full details of the financial circumstances which make them unable to pay fees. If the supervisor supports the claim, s/he will need to submit an application to the Graduate Research School on, or prior to, the due date for the relevant session.
The Dean of Graduate Research will assess all applications after the session due date and refer to the selection criteria in the HDR Scholarship Policy.

Autumn Session: 27 February
Spring Session: 27 July
