Soka University Scholarship for International Students Students in Japan 2021/22
Soka University runs a scholarship system for international (foreign national) students enrolled in the school in order to minimize their financial strain.
Undergraduate Program Students
Soka University Foundation for Education, Scholarship for International Students.
The scholarship is offered to students who meet the academic achievement standards.
- Candidates: International students who are enrolled in the Undergraduate Program of Soka University, who demonstrate excellent academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulty in continuing enrollment because of financial strain, are eligible.
- Academic requirements:
Overall GPA is equal to or above 3.5 – JPY 50,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 600,000 per year)
Overall GPA is equal to or above 2.8 and below 3.5 – JPY 40,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 480,000 per year)
Overall GPA is equal to or above 2.2 and below 2.8 – JPY 30,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 360,000 per year)
Note: The Grade Point Average (GPA) at Soka is calculated on a 4.0 scale. - Application process:
Incoming students: The procedures are explained after enrollment at the scholarship orientation for international students.
Continuing students (those who will become second, third or fourth year students): The application will occur after the orientation session to be held in December. - Disbursement: After confirming the student’s enrolment, disbursement is made generally made at the end of each month to recipient’s bank account.
Note: this scholarship format refers to the 2020 Academic Year, and it may suffer changes in the future.
Academic Fee Exemption Scholarship for International Students
Screening of recipients is conducted before enrollment, and the exemption is applied from the first year.
- Candidates: International students who are enrolled in the Undergraduate Program of Soka University, who demonstrate excellent academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulty in continuing enrollment because of financial strain, are eligible.
- Amount of exemption and household income:
Annual household income of the previous year is below JPY 4,000,000 – full exemption of tuition and school fees
Annual household income of the previous year is equal or above JPY 4,000,000 and below JPY 8,000,000 – half exemption of tuition and school fees
Annual household income of the previous year is equal or above JPY 8,000,000 and below JPY 10,000,000 – quarter exemption of tuition and school fees
Annual household income of the previous year is above JPY 10,000,000 – no exemption of tuition and school fees
If the student has a sibling concurrently enrolled in Soka University, the annual household income is recalculated as below:
In case the student has a sibling currently enrolled in the Undergraduate Program at Soka University and/or Soka Women’s College, the household income to be considered for the exemption will be deducted in JPY 1,800,000.
In case the student has a sibling currently enrolled in the Preparatory Japanese Language Program and Undergraduate Non-degree program at Soka University, the household income to be considered for the exemption will be deducted in JPY 1,470,000.
* In case the student has a sibling currently enrolled in the Graduate School at Soka University, there will be no deduction. - Application method: Candidates applying for the Undergraduate Admissions for International Students can simultaneously apply for the scholarship. Results for both applications are announced together. The length of exemption period is one academic year. Those who wish continuation must apply for it for each respective year.

Matters pertaining to both types of scholarship
- The university accepts applications from not only international students with the student visa, but also Japanese national students dependent to a parent who resides outside of Japan and possess citizenship, permanent residency, or a corresponding right of that country or territory.
- The scholarships do not apply to students who have exceeded the standard length of enrollment.
- Undergraduate Program students are required to earn at least the following number of credits: by the end of each semester students should have obtained at least 15 credits the first semester, 30 credits the second semester (first year), 45 credits the third semester, 60 credits the fourth semester (second year), 75 credits the fifth semester, 90 credits the sixth semester (third year), 105 credits the seventh semester.
- The academic fees exempted in the exemption scholarship refer to tuition and school fees, and not applicable to the application fee, admission fee, registration fee, course materials, or Gakuyu-kai Club Association fees.
- The scholarships are in the form of a grant, not a loan requiring repayment.
Graduate School Students
Soka University Makiguchi Memorial Education Fund, Scholarship for International Students
The scholarship is offered to students who meet the academic achievement standards.
- Candidates: International students who are enrolled in Graduate School of Soka University, who demonstrate excellent academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulty in continuing enrollment because of financial strain, are eligible.
- Academic requirements:
Students who have obtained a set number of credits – JPY 30,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 360,000 per year) - Application process: The procedures are explained after enrollment at the scholarship orientation for international students.
- Disbursement: Disbursement are generally made at the end of each month to recipients’ bank accounts.

Full exemption of academic fees - Application process: Candidates applying for International Students Application for Graduate Schools can simultaneously apply for the scholarship. Results for both applications are announced together. The length of exemption period is 1 academic year. Those who wish continuation must apply for it for each respective year.
