One Doctoral Studentship (open to UK/EU and International students): this award will provide a significant contribution towards tuition fees and maintenance for three years. The successful candidate may also be asked to contribute up to 150 hours per annum to departmental teaching (including preparation time). The total value of the award and teaching remuneration will be c. £25,000 per annum. These studentships are available to fund research on any aspect of Greek or Roman antiquity.
The Department prides itself on its vigorous research culture, in which postgraduate research students play central roles.
All members of the department have specific research interests and activities, which together cover most aspects of the language, literature, history and material culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. Current major research projects include ancient medicine, Greek impact on non-Greek cultures, ancient migration, Roman connectivity, fragmentary literature and Greek political thought. This award carries no preference for any particular area of classical research, although applicants should address the question of why Exeter is the right institution for their doctoral project.
Entry requirements
We invite applications from candidates with a strong academic background and a clear and engaging research proposal which can be developed through available research supervision.
Successful applicants normally have a good first degree (at least 2.1, or international equivalent) in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline, and have obtained, or are currently working towards, a Masters degree at Merit level, or international equivalent, in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline. If English is not your native language then you will also need to satisfy our English language entry requirements.
Please note this studentship is only open to applicants who will start their study in September 2020, not those who have already started.
